install office xp upgrade on a different computer after HD crash

I need to install Office XP 2002 on a different computer due to a hard drive
crash on the computer it was originally installed on. (That original computer
is being junked -- can not retrieve data, or uninstall.) This version of
Office XP is an UPGRADE version. When I try to install it on the new
computer, it closes out the process because a required previous version of
Office is not found. Any suggestions? (I don't have installation disks for
the previous version.)

(When attempting to email MS support, a product ID is required -- Is this
the same as the product key on the CD case? If so, it is not being
accepted...)

Upgrades require evidence of previous versions.. there is no way around it,
but to obtain a previous version..

Second question:
The Product ID is not the same as the Product Key. The Product ID number is
provided in Help, About {it is labeled Product ID}.

Thanks. To be clear -- even if I pay for the MS support phone call, they
won't be able to give me a workaround? And I'll now need to find/purchase a
pre-2004 version of Office to install first?

You only need a Works CD to prove you have a qualifying product. If you
don't have Works 6 (or pre) then you can buy from amazon. Second hand
should be fine as you don't need to install it but just have a CD ready
and insert it in the Cd-Drive when prompted to do so.

You've mentioned Office 2004 - that's a Mac version. *Not* the same thing as
Office XP.
