Install Outlook 2007 to replace Outlook 2002

In answering this, please assume I am technically hopeless! I have a new
Outlook 2007 to install on my laptop (with Vista) which has Outlook 2002 at
present. Is it Ok just to run it and it will overwrite the existing programme
and keep all existing files (emails, address book etc)?

I would wish to back up my existing files first but I'm not sure how to.
Unless this happens automatically, it is not currently done (which I guess is
pretty stupid). I have looked at other messages here and I can't even find
the location of the Outlook programme on my C drive as suggested in some.
Some simple instructions would be appreciated.

I don't know how to do that. Anyway, would that not delete all of my existing
emails and addresses? I did say to assume I knew nothing! If it is relevant,
my Outlook 2002 is part of Microsoft Office XP Small Business but now being
run on Vista. I have just bought the Outlook 2007 upgrade without upgrading
the whole Office programme.

uninstall outlook 2002 first and reboot.

It's basic installation options - Control panel, add/remove software... find
office (or outlook if you only have outlook) and run the installer wizard,
choosing the uninstall or remove option. Use the custom option to remove
just outlook.

FWIW, if you can return outlook and exchange it for a suite, I'd highly
recommend it. You'll have a better experience. See

Sometimes installing a later version will deytect the earlier version (when I
installed Outlook 2007 it did), but it's usually best to uninstall the older
Outlook first. Do you intend to remove all of Office XP or only replace the
Outlook component?

Then in Add/Remove Programs, select Office XP and click Change. Select
Add/Remove Features. Locate Outlook and change the icon to say "Not
available". Finish out the wizard and Outloook 2002 will be removed. You can
then install Outlook 2007.

Office XP is not on the listed programmes in Add/Remove, possibly because I
am now using Vista with Office XP? I need to know how to get to the Change

If you installed it, it will be under the "Uninstall a program" option in
Vista.
