Install Problem - Office Standard 2003

R

Ron San Diego

I bought Office Standard Edition 2003 Upgrade because at least two links on support.microsoft.com stated Microsoft Works 6.0 is an "Upgrade Path." (In addition to Office XP, Office 2000 and Office 97) But when I try to install I receive the following error message: "Error 1919. Error configuring ODBC data source: MS Access Database, ODBC error 6: Component not found in the registry. Verify that the file MS Access Database exists and that you can acces it.

Well, of course I can't access it because I don't have Office! I tried to contact Microsoft via net.Passport but could not connect because they asked for the Product Number. When I clicked "How do I find the product number? the support message said to start the program and click the "About" selection. But I can't do that because it won't install the program

And to think I've been a loyal, registered, card-carrying Microsoft buyer since 1985... Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi, Ron,

The knowledge base has the following fix:

818954 - "Error 1919. Error Configuring ODBC Data Source" Error Messages
When You Run Setup for Office 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818954&Product=ofw

Hope that helps.

Hi Susan - Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the procedure you recommended is a little too technical for me, especially since I don't have the Windows XP CDs (they came already loaded on my HP computer). I'm don't think I want to edit the Registry and other files mentioned in the Knowledge Base fix, so I'll just return the program to Best Buy. But thanks again for your help!

Hi, Ron,

If it's preloaded, then you'll need to contact the computer manufacturer for
support. They are responsible for supporting the copies they install.
