installation and setup problem with office 97

I installed office 97 on a new computer and it says installation and setup
complete... then I go to open up word or exel and I get this message

"This application must be installed to run. please run setup from the
location that you originally installed the application."

It is fully installed... any ideas...

I used the original office 97 CD... i also am having the same problem with
exel BUT for some reason publisher opens fine...
