Installation of Office Pro 2007

I purchased Office Professional 2007 and have installed it on my three
computers, two desktops and a laptop. I am going to have to reformat the
harddrive on one of my desktops and will have to reinstall Office. Is there a
maximum number of times I can install this program? I recently had a battle
with Symantec over this issue, you have a maximum of three installations of
their Anti-Virusafter which you have to to re-purchase the program. This
seems to be bordering on illegal as the program is mine after I purchase it.
I really hope Microsoft doesn't use the same rational for their products.

I was dictating the typing from the phone on the last post to my son, the
number of installs is two total, one PC and one laptop, he was including the
reinstall. I am glad to hear that I will be able to reinstall on the same
computer after I reformat. What happens if the reformat doesn't work and I
have to purchase another computer. Is there a way I can install the package
on my new computer or am I just out the $500+ ?

Number of installs you can do aside, if you purchased Office Pro 2007
retail, then you are (generally speaking) allowed to install it on one
"licensed device" (a desktop) and one "portable device" (laptop that the
user of the desktop uses), so it sounds to me as if you're already violating
the EULA.

If it's an OEM version that came preinstalled, then the installation is only
allowed on the specific computer it came with.

"Activations on the same PC using the same product key are unlimited.
Product Activation discourages piracy by limiting the number of times a
product key can be activated on different PCs." That's in the paragraph
about 'How does MIcrosoft Product Activation work?" at
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_faq.mspx So there is a limit, but
it doesn't say what it is. If you look at the EULA, there's a thing about
reassigining the license to another device. I think that would cover it if
you decided you wanted to activate on a different PC instead, but I don't
know what is involved in reassigning the license to another device.

Also generally speaking, you purchase a license to use most software; you
don't actually own it. In fact, the EULA for Office Pro 2007 says "SCOPE OF
LICENSE. The software is licensed, not sold. This agreement only gives you
some rights to use the software."

Ah, good, glad you found what you needed. Probably you won't have a problem
if you have to install on a new system and then activate Office. You may be
prompted to install via phone, in which case you'd just call the number and
explain you purchased a new system. Shouldn't be an issue. Now, if you
immediately have to reinstall a gazillion times on that system or start
installing a bunch of times on other systems, then you'll have a problem.
:) MS's system isn't nearly as draconian as Symantec's sounds, though!
