Installation of Project server 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2

I am attempting to install and configure Project Server 2007 on Windows
Server 2008 R2. After successful installation, Sharepoint configuration, and
PWA setup, I try to access the PWA site and get the error message "An
unexpected error has occurred". If I follow the same installation /
configuration procedure with the only difference being Windows Server 2003 I
can open the PWA website successfully.

I am creating a clean install of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and applying all
available updates (I have also tried with out any updates).
I add the Application Server & Web Server Roles plus any other required
roles. I also enable Webserver support and COM+ Network Access under the
Application Server configuration.

I then install SQL Server 2005 Std x64 followed by SP3 (using Windows
Update via WSUS to install). I then apply all available updates (I have also
tried with out any updates apart from SP3). I change the SQL Surface area
configuration to use named pipes & TCP/IP. SQL Authentication is mixed mode.
Collation is set to:
Binary – No
Binary Code Point – No
Case sensitive – No
Kana Sensitive – Yes
Accent Sensitive - Yes
Width Sensitive – Yes

I then install Project Server 2007 x64 with SP2 slipstreamed. I choose a
Complete installation.
I run the Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard and
create a new server farm. To keep it simple while resolving this problem I
create a user with both domain and local administrator rights and grant "run
as a service" rights to the user. This user is used for all service accounts
ie search service / content / SQL Server. (The first time I set up PS2007 I
used seperate accounts with only the appropriate access rights granted).

In the Sharepoint configuration site I start the Project Application Service
and start and configure the Search Service.
I create a Shares Services Provider Site and create a PWA site.
I create a MS Office Project workspace site collection.
I create a new SSP and use the first website I created.
On the SSP Project Web Access Sites I create a Project Web Access Site using
the second website I created.
The Site provisions successfully.
Now when I try to access the site from either the server or remotely I get
the error message. If I try and access the site using an unauthenticated
user then I get an access denied message, so I am connecting and
authenticating successfully.

I am not an expert in any of the particular areas ie Win Server, Sharepoint
(WSS3.0), SQL Server 2005 or Project Server so I could quite easily have
missed something obvious, so any suggestions for additional steps in the
above process would be appreciated.

I had a similar issue, which appeared to be caused by me using the fully qualified domain name of the server http://server.internaldomain/pwa. When I used the netbios name like this http://servername/pwa the problem did not occur.

I still don't understand why the problem happens but it seems to be related to sharepoint.

Well I solved my problem.
I though I had slipstreamed both the Project Server 2007 SP2 and WSS SP2
service packs into the Project server intall folder update directory, however
I discovered WSS SP2 was not installed while checking version numbers in
Sharepoint.
I have now installed WSS SP2 immediately after Project Server install
finishes and before the Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration
Wizard runs. After the service pack installs the configuration wizard then
runs.
I am not sure what went wrong with the slip stream, I either missed copying
the WSS SP2 files into the updates directory along with the PS2007 SP2 files,
or the install doesn't like having both sets of files in the directory.
Unfortunately I have overwritten the install folder with a fresh install so I
will never know where I went wrong :)
