Installing 2 versions of Office

R

Rob

I've recently purchased Office 2007 and would like to know if it is possible
to install that and also keep my Office XP version. Can this be done
without encountering any known problems?

Thanks JoAnn, but is there a way to do it, say by installing on my 2nd HD
or will it still cause problems? I guess it needs to be installed on the
main HD does it or am I mistaken?

The hardrive itself doesn't matter if you are talking about the same
copy of Windows. The situation of two different Office versions on the
same Windows is not supported by Microsoft, but they tried to do as much
as possible to make it usable.
What programs do you use mostly?

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your reply. In answer to your question, I mainly use Word and
Excel, (were you just asking about Office programs?). I'm especially
involved in designing spreadsheets using a lot of VBA for my place of
employement. This is my main reason to keep both versions of Office as I
have experienced difficulties in the past, where some VBA in a spreadsheet
did not work properly when going from one version to another. Do you know
if 2007 has any issues with spreadsheets created in Excel XP (which I think
is Excel 2002)?

I think I'm just going to have to take the plunge anyway and change the VBA
code to suit if I do encounter some problems.

Hi Rob,

For Word, you'll have the problem that both versions will constantly
fight over who owns the DOC file extension. There is a workaround for
that, just ask for it when you get to that point.
Excel 2007 can open Excel XP files. I don't know how compatible the VBA
code is going to be. That will very much depend on what you do in VBA...

Thanks Patrick,

It sounds like its' not really an issue running both versions, particularly
if I open the documents from within the version I open. Obviously, as you
say, the ownership of the extension may need configuring, which I expect I
can do through the Open With settings in Widows Explorer.
I'm still a bit concerned that there are some unknowns regarding Registry
implications, etc., which I may not want to have to deal with, as I'd like
to keep my computer as lean and clean as possible and why invite trouble.

I may need to go to the Excel Newsgroup to answer the more specific question
of VBA compatability, if I pursue this issue.
However, I'm leaning towards uninstalling the earlier version and starting
with a clean install of 2007.

Thanks again,
Rob

The Word issue can't be resolved the way you described. It is:
Use the NoRereg key for whichever version you don't want to register.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

Add a DWORD named NoRereg set to 1

This example would make 2007 the default and not 2003. For 2002, it is
10.0

Your Excel VBA question can definitely be better answered in the Excel
group.
