Installing 2007 without losing Office XP?

P

piersden

Don't want to ruin my Office XP which has been working beautifully for the
past 5 years. Seen variety of recommendations all over this board but would
like to consolidate into one single doc:
1) Can I install Office 2007 either on a separate drive or, if on C drive,
should I install into a "new" program folder (e.g. Office 2007)?
2) I believe there is an option to either install either as "new" or
upgrade. Should I install as "new" to protect my current Office XP?
3) I've read there are options for installing only certain components. I
also understand that Outlook is somewhat problematical. Should I therefore
install only Word, Excel, Powerpoint and possibly Publisher? Does this mean
that for Outlook, I will still be able to use current version (Outlook 2002,
SP3)?
4) Will there be any problem(s) with Word, Powerpoint or Excel documents
being viewed by someone still using an older release of Office (e.g. Office
98 or Office 97)?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have to ask this: Why are you willing to risk the stability of your system
with this beta?

Thank you. I am going to play fortune teller. In February, this newsgroup
(and others) will see a sudden increase of panicking posters who are stuck
with Office 2007 viewers and files that can't be converted to an older
format without someone else's intervention.

Well you have read the warnings below...too bad MS did not tell people about
that under the system requirements..."Install on second unimportant PC" Why
? because they know not many people have a second PC and they want the beta
deployed to as many users as possible. So who cares if it messes up some
data.

Anyway I will not argue against what they said. I did install mine on a
second HD and during the install you can select custom and then under
outlook there is a box or something with a big red X. Check that one and it
will not install outlook , which I did. So I still have my office XP pro
outlook. Don't know why cause I don't use that clunky old thing. I got that
tip from another user on this NG ..'anonymous'

I also have not used it to work on any of my files in case of corruptions so
I only play around with it to see what its like...For now I certainly prefer
the existing Office XP's menu system...this ribbon stuff as they call gives
me eye strain...but that's another story..

proceed with caution if you cant resist the temptation to try it, but
truthfully you aint missing much. My $$ will be safe in the bank for this
new release. :)
