"installing messages"

I have a client were I installed 2003 Pro several
months ago and there haven't been any problems
with any of the components. Suddenly, or at least
since the last time I visited that machine, any time
an Office component is opened/selected, we get
a variety of "installing messages" beginning with
"preparing to install", etc.. Sort of like one would
get if they had chosen the "install on 1st reference"
option when Office was initially installed. That
scenario repeats anytime a component is opened.

What would cause this?

How do I rectify the situation?

I bet you get it when you start a search too.

The computer I was getting it on, (thread is below a few days) there was
apparently some files leftover from an earlier version that was causing the
problem. searched Microsoft office with 'windows is preparing to install'
and looked for patches for Office 2003 and one of the things under there
cleared it up.

I've gotten it on two different computers. Seems like an issue that should
have an easier fix to find.

I don't believe this particular machine ever had a previous
level of Office. I.e., the initial version was/is O2003 Pro.
I will visit the client again tomorrow and search as you
suggested.

of Office either. But Symantec was the root cause then. I had to remove
Norton and every registry entry for Symantec to get it to stop.

Symantec wouldn't be the problem on this machine either. I'll run
the utility later today (Friday) and post back with whatever I find.
