Instant search ":problem"

Ever since installing Outlook 2007, I've had intermittent problems with the
search function. Usually, I notice it in contacts when it simply doesn't
find anything I search for. One time the fix was to use diagnostics to
repair the problem. Another time I had to reindex it.

Now I've got a problem with the Inbox, where I get the message: "Instant
search encountered a problem while trying to display search results.
Modifying your query may resolve the problem."

Of source, it's hard to modify a query that is simply a word in a subject
line.

I'm using XP.

Any thoughts?

Can't tell. I have Service Pack 3. When I open the search function and
click Help, I learn that I have Windows version 5.1 (Build
2600,xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236: Service Pack 3. On the windows web site
there is a Windows search 4.0, but I don't know what I have.

I have automatic updates turned on and it shows I've had every update
Windows offers.

Yes, I did go to updates.microsoft.com; the only thing updated was a
validation tool. And I again did the diagnostic option in Outlook. While
is claimed everything was OK with my disk, during the process I got a
message under Disk Diagnostics that there was a "exception processing
message c0000a3." However, at the end of that diagnostic, it said my disk
was fine.
