Internal document document links open in new document

I have a Word document that I opened from SharePoint. If I create a cross reference to say a heading in the same document, then use Ctrl + click to follow it, Word wants to open a new instance of the document in a browser.

How do I convince Word to just follow the internal link?

Following links from the table of contents works fine. Also, if I open the document directly from the sever (i.e. not via SharePoint) internal links work as expected.
