What has Internet Explorer got to do with attaching a document? What are you
trying to do?
Which OS and Office are you using.

I have the Office Home and Student 2007. When I try to open a saved document
Word opens but the document does not appear. The same thing happens if I try
to open a document to attach it to say an email. If I click on anything the
top pane on the Word screen states "Windows Internet Explorer is not
responding".

Try running Office Setup and selecting the repair option. If that fails,
then it is probably your AntiVirus. Kapersky and NAV are often reported as
causing this problem.
