Internet Explorer Script Error Message

John Calder

Hi

I run WinXP with Frontpage 2000

When I am in normal view and then switch to Preview I get the following
error message:-

Internet Explorer Script Error

"An Error has occured in the script in this page"

Line: 19
Char: 1
Error: Object Expected
Code: 0
URL: file://C:\Documents and Settings\qacalj\local
settings\temp\FrontpageTempDir\pvw2.htm

Do you wish to continue running scripts on this page? yes/no

If I select YES then the error goes and everthing seems to work ok. This is
also the case if I select NO

This errror occurs on every page that I open up in Frontpage. It does not
seem to affect my web page when viewed live through Internet Explorer.

I have opened other peoples web pages in Frontpage and get the same error
message which leads me to believe it has nothing to do with the code on my
pages.

Also each tiime I try to preview a page and get the same message it appears
to create a new temp file

URL: file://C:\Documents and Settings\qacalj\local
settings\temp\FrontpageTempDir\pvw1.htm

URL: file://C:\Documents and Settings\qacalj\local
settings\temp\FrontpageTempDir\pvw2.htm

URL: file://C:\Documents and Settings\qacalj\local
settings\temp\FrontpageTempDir\pvw3.htm

etc etc

Although I am still able to build my web pages it is quite annoying to
constantly have the error pop up everytime I preview a page.

I work for a large manufacturing company and our computer technical people
seem to have no idea on how to fix it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Thanks for your prompt respons Steve. I downloaded the fix but unfortunately
it has not rectified the problem.

Have you any other suggestions?

Thanks

When you open the page in IE, look in the left corner of the status bar.
Does it display "Done but with errors?

Also, do you have Firefox installed?
If so, open the page in FF and then click Tools > Error Console.
See if FF says there is an error.

Also, in IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure "disable script debugging is unchecked.

Thanks for your help. The site I manage is one of many for a large
manufacturing company. All the web sites in the company are similar in that
they use the same menu system based on a template that is supplied to
everyone. When I look at other deprtment sites I get the same error so I
assumed that the problem was not with my code. However as all the sites use
the same template, the same line of code is included in all the sites at the
same line position. This explained why I was getting the same error when I
looked at the other sites in the organisation. I confirmed this by looking at
an external site which does not produce the error, therefore the code is the
problem.

This is the odffending code:

<!--#include file="left_menu.shtm" -->

Anyway, now that I have narrowed it down I will try and get our tech people
to resolve the issue. Thanks again for your help

I am not a html writer. The code was written by other people so I do not
have any idea why it is shtm only that all the other business unit web pages
are the same.

One response I have received from our tech people is that the script error
may be a result of the security levels set in Internet Explorer. I have made
a request to have this looked at, but I dont really think they know either.

Thanks Again

It could also be an error in an external javascript ( .js ) file that is called by the page(s).

Do you or one of your IT folks have firefox installed?
If so, open the page in FF, click Tools > Error Console and the console
will open with a list of errors if any, and the page or file they are in.
Click the error and FF will open the page or file with the error highlighted.
