Internet mail VS. Exchange(Internal LAN) mail in Outlook 2003

Since upgrading to 2003, Outlook seems to be unable to determine for itself
whether my emails need to go to our internal Exchange server or out to the
Internet to our external SMTP server at our ISP. Has anyone experienced this
& is there a work around for it? Thanks for any help!
