I purchased MS office professional, and the product key
is invalid. Is it a pirated copy, or what?

I've no idea - you've given me such an overwhelming amount of information.
What does the CD look like (see
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/re/ee959bd8-14b4-4601-91a7-eea1043249fa.mspx)?
How did you acquire it? Are you sure you're typing the key in correctly (a
'1' can look like an 'I' an '0' like an 'O' a '5' like an 'S' an '8' like a
'B', a '6' like a 'G', etc). What does it say on the CD? If it says 'for
distribution only with a new PC' then you have an OEM copy and it has most
probably already been activated.

Post back with more information and someone can probably assist you.
