Why is it that the first thing people want to do when something isn't quite
right they want to defenestrate their new computer? I'll tell you what - you
can't fix the problem and I don't want you to suffer so I'll take that bad
system and put it out of its misery. ;-)

Try changing graphics drivers. Yes, I know - "They're current because I just
bought the thing." Try it anyway. Someone just posted in here a few days
ago. He had a similar problem and deleted the "special" drivers and is using
the standard Windows drivers - works just fine.

You must remember that when that card was released unto the web that is when
they had the "up-to-date" drivers. Go to the manufacturers website and
download the new ones. I am SURE that they have new ones by now. ATI?

I got a private email from the OP. He changed out the graphics card and now
it's fine. :)

I am very well aware of that but new drivers are relesed every few months.
When was the card bought? And when was the card displayed on store shelfes?
From that time since there coulda' been an update.

Really? That's funny because Matrox do not, have never and never will
manufacture hard drives. They produce high-end graphics cards and video
editing equipment. I assume you meant Maxtor (known in the trade as Crapster
because they have a lifespan of around 4 months). You gets what you pays
for...

I am experiencing the same problem with Publisher 2003.
I have tried installing the latest video drivers- ATI powered Radeon 9600
series 256mb. It only works with a basic windows default vga driver, but the
scrolling is not smooth and I am unable to install my Philips flat panel
monitor driver.
Any suggestions apart from buying a new video card. My PC is only a few
months old and has XP Home SP2 installed.

TIA

Many thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I do have Office 2003 Service Pack 1 installed.
To clarify : installing the latest Radeon drivers does not resolve the
problem.
I currently have them installed and have now successfully installed my
Philips monitor driver.
However I'm no nearer to getting my graphics visible in Publisher 2003 (they
do print)

Running on a default video driver temporarily fixes the problem, but as soon
as the PC is restarted again it autodetects and installs a Microsoft Radeon
driver which unfixes it. (The video scrolling has a ripply effect on the
default driver so it's not terribly usable anyway)

Any other suggestions will be gratefully received.

Hi Rockhopper,
The Catalyst Windows XP 4.10 driver recommends Windows XP service pack 2. This
package is an .exe file, once installed Windows shouldn't try to install default
drivers. Is your graphics card seated properly? The driver has a timestamp of October
14, 2004. This is really new...
Set your acceleration down some. Right-click the desktop, properties, settings,
advanced, troubleshoot tab.
Your ripply effect, is that on all programs? Is smooth scrolling enabled in Internet
properties?

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your suggestions.

The driver I have is the one you mentioned-I downloaded and installed it
yesterday.
I have Windows XP SP2.

The ripply effect happens in any thing when you scroll a window up/down.
I have a MS wireless optical mouse, but it only behaves like that on a
default driver.
Smooth scrolling is enabled.

I'll give some of your other suggestions a try and let you know.

Thanks,

Gladys (rockhopper)

Mary sounds like she knows about Service Packs How do I determine whether my
laptop has Service Pack 2? I have not personally installed it, but maybe it's
there without my knowing about it. A message from Microsoft suggests
installing certain updates depending on whether my computer has SP2 or not.
So how do I determine which to install??

Right-clicking My Computer and clicking Properties will allow you to see
your Windows version, service-pack'd or otherwise.

Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) will tell you which
updates are applicable to your machine.
