Invoice sum fields no longer work in Word 2003

Randall Arnold

I created some invoice documents using a template in Word XP (2002). Now
when I go back and open them in Word 2003 to change values, calculated
fields are no longer updated. I've even saved, exited and reloaded-- no go.

As far as I can see nothing has been changed other than the fact that I
upgraded to 2003. I don't recall if this came up in the beta or not.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Randall,

Does your template contain Word Form Fields? If are the fields that
supply the values to the calculation set to "Calculate on exit"?

Yes, they are form fields. It's the standard Microsoft invoice template,
modified in a few areas. Previously, sum fields would recalculate when a
constituent field lost focus. I haven't done anything to change this. It
worked last time I updated a document but that's been a few months... not
sure what happened in the interim.

Could this have been a problem fixed after the last 2003 beta release? I'm
still running the refresh.

Thanks,

Randall Arnold

Update:

If I remove Protection, right-click on a sum (or product) field to bring up
Properties, then just click OK (without actually changing anything) the
field values will update. Protection is set for editing form fields only.
It's my understanding this is the standard setup for forms. Maybe a bug in
Protection that was later fixed?

Hi Randall,

I don't recall any bugs corrected in this area - but that doesn't mean
there weren't any. <g>

I have the RTM version and calculated form fields update 'as
advertised'. One thought though, you may be encountering the Word
field vulnerability patch which was included in Word 2003. I don't
think it applies to calculated fields but it doesn't hurt to check.
Here is an article that contains more information on the patch and it
contains link to a download you can use to modify the field security
setting which is stored in the Registry:

Hi Randall,

Possibly. I do know that there were several protection bugs corrected
since Document Protection did change in Word 2003.

If you want to zip up a small file an email it to me I can take a look
at it using the RTM version. Please email it rather than posting the
attachment to the newsgroup. :)

Hi Randall,

Thanks for the example. :)

If you view the form field properties for the Quantity and Unit Price
fields the option "Calculate on exit" is not turned on. After you
change this option for all constituent fields then the calculated
fields should update correctly.
