Irritated with Hosting Companies

R

Rob

I am thinking about getting my own webserver to host my website.

Does anyone on here do that and if so, could you give me some insight about
it.

Cost of a good server
Is it for the average man like myself
Any hidden charges
Is it worth doing or do I need to continue trying to find a host company
that will do what it claims

HELP HELP HELP PLEASE

Welcome to the irritated club! I am sure you'll get some good replies on
this topic as far as setting up your own hosting, but I can tell you that
with all the security issues and so forth - I would rather find a company i
can rely on to handle this aspect and let me spend my time in my field with
web design and development work.

FWIW - I went with a recommendation by a fellow MVP to use webhost4life.com
and have been satisfied with them. tech support has been great on any minor
issues or questions that have come up.

good luck.

You really do not want to host your own web server, and most DSL/Cable ISPs
do not allow the connection of a web server to home/personal accounts, plus
you will them have to be responsibility for all security issues, etc.

Don't you ever want to go away for a few days or have a vacation? There ARE
good hosting companies out there.

Rob,
Go here and get smart http://www.dslwebserver.com/ ...it's EASY and it's fun
for the "average guy". Some concerns with your ISP and you hosting a server
have been raised. Most TOS do restrict you from running a server....HOWEVER,
the good news is neither Verizon nor Comcast enforce the policy. When I
called and asked for the rules about this both company reps told me they
dont provide SUPPORT for technical issues on servers...what you do with
line they dont seem to care. I have pushed over 10 Gig per month on both
Verizon and Comcast with no problems (FTP and Webserver).

I would only recommend this method for non-mission critical sites. You can
run mutilple sites using IIS and Host Headers on 1 static IP. The drawback
to this is you cannot do it if any site your hosting requires SSL..say for
payment processing, but then again thats mission critical so put those on T1
or greater commercial servers.

Good Luck,
JCrowe

It just so happens that I have Comcast

I ended up going with www.leethosting.com. My dumb butt paid a year in advance. Well guess what? On December 21, 2003 they were bought by some other company. All this week, my site has been up/down/slow. Well on Saturday morning I was uploading some pages and files to my site. The upload was terminated and now my site is nonexistent. Of course there is not telephone to get in contact with anyone

I picked leethosting because they are in the US. I have had trouble with middle east hosting companies and also with a Canadian company.

I need suggestions for some reputable companies. My site is just my hobby. It is not any kind of business but it is pretty big. It is about 800MBs

Anyone have any more suggestions for companies I can trust?
