irritating screen flicker associated with spell/grammar check

The effect of Word performing a spelling/grammar check is that my computer
screen flickers whilst it is in operation. Operation is evidenced by an icon
at bottom of screen which portrays a pencil writing across a book when the
check is operating, a tick displayed when it's not. The checker operates most
of the time unless I turn off all checking features.

I don't want to turn the Checker off but the screen flicker is vey
distracting and irritating. Is there a way around this problem please?

I don't see this, on many machines. Could be a problem with your graphics card
driver? Try updating it from the manufacturer's website and see if that makes a
difference.
