Is it possible to restrict creation of resources in an mpp file

We need to stop project managers from adding new resources manually to the
project and ensure that they can only pick from the central resource pool.
Is this possible? I cannot find a way of stopping someone typing into the
resources field

You can do it in Admin section at project server. Server Configuration ->
Features -> Table "Select the features that you want to make available to
users in Project Web Access":
Check Deny in "Create Accounts from Microsoft Project". Look up this table,
may be you can find any other interesting things.

Thanks Alexander for your reply. This however does not stop someone (who is
using MS Project Professional on the desktop) from simply adding new
resources. I do appreciate however that these newly added resources will not
be uploaded to Project Server it still allows the addition and does not force
the project manager to pick from a predefined list.

There is no automatic way in Project Server to prevent PM's from creating
local resources in their projects. Therefore, this is strictly a training
and performance issue. You will need to train your PM's not to create local
resources in their projects and then hold them accountable for this
performance. Hope this helps.

Hey Simon,

It is true that you cannot prevent a user from adding local resources
to their files but if you disable the "New Resource" global permission
for project managers, they will receive a spooler error whenever the
save or publish their plans on the server. This will in a way force
them to deal with the situation by contacting the Administrator and
will eventually teach them to not add local resources to their plans.
If they need a new user, they should put a request in for the new user
to be added and use a generic resource in the meantime as a place
holder. Then when the new resource is added, they can do a replace of
the generic place holder with the new resource in the Build Team from
Enterprise.

Again, the tool does not take away a project managers total ability to
do things in their plan but process is what will ultimately get you
where you need to be. It is key to have well defined processes and to
enforce those processes in order for and EPM solution like this to
succeed.

Hope that helps,

Jonathan Sofer
