Is it possible to use a watermark in Word?

Yes it is. Create your graphic and copy it into your Header... If you are
using an old version of Word, you may have to set the Top Margin size to a
negative number, e.g. -1", this then opens up the Header to the full length
of the page...

You don't say what version of Word you are using. If it's Word 2002, go to
Format | Background | Printed Watermark. In all versions, see the Help topic
"Create a watermark." For versions before Word 2002, see “HOW TO: Create a
Watermark in Microsoft Word 2000” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211324

I want to do this in Word97.

I will have a look at the link for 2000 and see if it is similar.

Well, this is why it's a good idea to tell us what version you're using. <g>
The article for Word 97 is "WD97: How to Create a Watermark in Word" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=180976, but it will be substantially the
same as the one I cited.
