G'Day Geoff,

First, I am not clear whether you are asking the question in
relation to an upgrade of Office or of Windows.

In general, if you upgrade Office nothing is lost, but if you
upgrade Windows then ALL will be lost unless you take
steps to prevent it.

The folders that you normally see in Outlook (Calendar,
Contacts......Sent Items, Tasks) are all contained in a single
file that has a name like <username>.PST (Personal Storage).

Run Outlook and display the "Folder List"
Examine the "root" folder - it is usually called something like:
- Personal Folders (Outlook Today)
| - Cal...
|

Right-click it, choose properties and then click the "Advanced..."
button (lower right).

In this second dialog you will see a "Filename:" box - that is the
full name and location of your Personal Folders File and you
should probably back it up occasionally, especially just prior
to ANY upgrade.

If you have a second HDD or a writable CD, Microsoft
provides a free Outlook Addin to back up your personal folders -
