...is not a valid Single File Web Page

When trying to use Word to open .txt files not created by a Microsoft
product, I get the error message "[FileName] is not a valid Single File Web
Page." For some reason Word is obviously expecting the text file to be a
Single File Web Page. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks.

Hi Jim

When Word tries to open a file that is not a Word file, Word tries to guess
what kind of file it is. Sometimes it guesses wrong. Try this: at Tools >
Options > General, tick "Confirm conversion at Open". When you tick this
box, and you try to open a file that is not a Word document, Word will not
try to guess what kind of file it is. Instead, you will get a list of file
types from which you can choose. Choose plain text (or something like that).

Hope this helps.

Shauna,

I agree that your approach works, but it's annoying to have to tell Word
that a .txt file is a plain text file every time you want to open a .txt
file. Is there some way to have Word always assume that a .txt file is a
plain text file?
