I need to know if Office 2007 applications are backward compatible with
Office 2000 applications?

Please advise.

There is a Compatibility Pack available:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/converter.mspx.

Note that users need to have it installed in order to be able to open
files using the new file format. Otherwise you can save the files in
the 97 - 2003 file format prior to distributing them.

However, this is only for the B2 release of 2007 and is a beta product also.
The disclaimer on the site specifically states that this will only open B2
saved files. Hopefully MS will release the fully functional converter pack
BEFORE the 2007 RTM release of office.

I'm not sure what you are referring to - the Compatibility Pack is
currently for B2TR which is the only version folks currently have
right now.

I do know compatibility is a primary concern for Microsoft so I'm
99.9% it will be updated for files created using the RTM version.
When, exactly, I don't know but I suspect it will be when RTM is
released to the public - I don't see how releasing it prior to the RTM
public release will be helpful since it won't apply until files
created using RTM are created and of course that won't happen until
after RTM is made public.

The default format of some of the Office programs cannot be opened with
older versions of Office programs. You will have to make sure that you do a
Save As and change the type for those older programs to open it.

Compatibility has not been a major concern for Microsoft in the past. They
have released many programs over the years that have not been backward
compatible without a patch. Look at the issue with Access files and backward
compatibility, the VB and macros in older versions of Office that won't work
at all in newer versions, and the converter for macro conversion didn't work
properly either in many instances..... I would like to have a functional
converter installed before I start receiving production work from other
people which will start to arrive immediately after 2007 has been released.
Even though the B2 release wasn't supposed to be used for production, I have
been receiving production work in B2 format for some time now. Also
wondering if there is going to be a decent viewer program for all the '07
released programs like MS finally provided for the '03s.

I don't intend this post to sound like I am bashing MS since I have been
using and teaching versions of Office since Win 3.1 days and Word even in
DOS days. I won't be teaching the '07 product for some time (probably 2
years) so there is no immediate plans to purchase it, but I do need the
converter.

Microsoft released the RTM version of the compatibility pack today (yes,
you can download it already):

Even though it can be downloaded I recommend against it right now
especially if you have a beta version of Office 2007 installed then DO
NOT install the Compatibility Pack on the same machine. It was not
designed to work with the beta versions and if installed the Office
2007 applications will not run.
