Is Outlook needed?

I have Office XP Business running on XP SP3. Is Outlook needed to run
Excel? I put Windows Live Mail on my computer and I like what it can do.
So I decided to un-install Outlook. Afterward, Excel would not open. I
re-installed Outlook, deleted Excel '.exe 'file and re-installed Excel and
it worked.

No, Outlook is not needed to run Excel
Deleting the excel.exe would have done nothing other than making excel
unavailable. A repair of office would have sufficed

No, Outlook isn't needed for Excel, it just sounds like something
happened during the "uninstall" procedure.
