Is the a German Dictionary in MS 2000?

R

Ritter197

I am trying to find out what I have to do under Windows MS Outlook 2000 to
sometimes use the German dictionary?

I normally want to use English.

I did change it under Windows XP Pro but when I go the MS Outlook and look
to Spelling I see many different versions of English, then the same for
French and finally for Spanish. That is all. I see no German or for that
matter any other language.

What I am missing here?

Quite new to Outlook, use to use Outlook Express for years.

Thanks for help. Hopefully detailed.

Outlook Express uses the spell checker in Word, so if Word isn't installed,
no checker. Therefore, it would follow that if you want to use a German
spell checker, you will need to install it in Word.

I don't know if Outlook functions the same, but I suspect it does.

I do have WORD installed.
But when I go the MS Outlook and type something with obvious errors in it in
German, a dropdown window comes up that says:
Word cannot find the grammar filemsgr2Ge.dll and /or msgrGE32.dll

So where do I go from here then?

If you have already installed the German dictionary in your copy of Word,
then I'm afraid I can't help you. I suppose you've already searched the MS
knowledge base on this subject. If not, get a cup of coffee and cruise
around in there a while.

Of course, you DID ask on one of the many Outlook newsgroups, didn't you...?

NO - that is the question.

Where do I get a free copy of a German- on the fly- dictionary/spellchecker
that works in WindowsXP, MS Outlook 2000 and Word 2000.

I don't know from free. MS Office 2000 Proofing Tools (which appears to be
discontinued) would do it. Failing that, there are lots of free online
translation services.

I am really looking for a German Spellchecker that works like the built-in
English one. Once I hit Spell-check in English, it shows incorrect words.

I think translation services are different or not?

Also saw not a lot of them with Google or Ask Jeeves either.

When in Word, do a search on Foreign Language. On my version, the second
item in the topics that show is "Check the spelling and grammar of text in
another language".

A LOT of information in there, all the details you want.

There is MUCH MORE than just having the right *.DIC file to do what you want
to do. When you have studied this, let us know what you decide to do, and
your results.

By the way, a cheap and easy solution might be to buy a German copy of Word.
I see lots of them on eBay.de for about 20 Euros...

I found this and it seems to work, even in MS Outlook 2000. And it is free.

Microsoft German Spellchecker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft has released a free spellchecker for Word 6.0 or MS-Office 97, to
accommodate the new Rechschreibreform. Please note that this one will not
work with older Microsoft products.

Compressed Download
mssp2_ge.zip -- 420,874 bytes

Uncompressed Download
mssp2_ge.lex -- 448,071 bytes

How to install:

Save to the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\ directory.
This one should already exist on your system containing the standard English
spellchecker. You simply add another language by saving this file. There is
no additional installing neccessary. Your default language will be
US-English.

Simply select TOOLS, LANGUAGE, and SET LANGUAGE before you start writing a
German document. Hint on editing a document already in German. Highlight the
entire text, and then follow the previous step of setting a language.

The file on the German Corner is in a Pkzip compressed format and must be
decompressed.

I have a copy of the German WORD. BUT it seemed to always interfere with the
English copy, even though in 2 very diffrent directories. So I un-installed
it.

I will look for the other thing you suggested, but do you realize that my
copy of MSOffice and therefore Outlook is 2000? Not 2003!

I went to WORD 2000 and there it is FIND, not Search. BUT -- it found
nothing at all under Foreign Languages.

Yes, same version I have. I run it on one machine under Win98SE and on
another under WinXP Pro.

You don't have a second machine to do your German editing on?

Sorry, let me be more clear: Open Word 2000, and hit the F1 (help) key.
Near the top left, the "Answer Wizard" tab should be open. Type "foreign
languages" in there, then look for "Check the spelling and grammar (etc)"
result and click it.

It's there.

Thanks for the clarification.
I got it where I can type the "Foreign Languages" and find that it supports
English, French and Spanish.

Others via the extra package from MS.

I found the file "msgrGE32.dll" and inserted it in Proof. It checks the
German spelling now but I notice that it often will not change properly.

For example, when I say "Ich gruesse Sie" it will bring up "Gruesse" with a
Capital G which is wrong in this case.

Does someone else has this problem and know possibly an answer?

Thanks in advance
