is there a program that will let me open an access database but not modify it
without me having to get a full version of access?

If all you want to do is to look at the data in the tables, then you can do
it with Excel. If you want to see forms and reports etc., then no.

It is possible to distribute a run-time only version of Access, but you
can't buy it as a product in it's own right: it can only be distributed by
someone who has a licence for the Developer Edition/Extensions.

Hi gm,

Exporting reports in the Snapshot format is supported in Access 2000/2002/2003. The viewer is
included on the installation CD, however, for Access 2000 & 2002 (and possibly 2003), there is a
newer version available that has had some security holes plugged. Here is a link where you can
learn more about this useful utility:

http://www.microsoft.com/accessdev/prodinfo/snapshot.htm

Note: The title of this article should be amended to include Access 2003.

If you are wanting to just view reports, there is a feature in Access 97 at least
(I can't say if it still exists in later versions) call export to snapshot
viewer. You can save reports in .snp format. Then others can use the snapshot
viewer to look at the reports if they don't have Access installed. They would
have to have the snapshot viewer installed to do this. I don't remember right
now where the snapshot viewer is available from, it was either on the Access CD
or is downloadable from Microsoft. Google or someone else on the ng should tell
you where. If you were to use this you could setup a macro to export the tables
on some scheduled basis to a common location where you want the other to see
them, or you could have Access email them.
