Is there a way to allow several people to access the same project file?

I posted a similar question in the main Project NG and someone
suggested I inquire here.

I am working on a software project. I have several contract
programmers doing various parts of the work. The project is getting to
the point where I would like to use some project management. I fiddled
around with Project awhile ago and am sure it can do what I need.

The problem is how to allow ll of the programmers to access the
project file. I would like them to see their tasks and be able to mark
them complete. I might even like to allow them to create tasks.

I do not have a server. I am running XP on a small (2 node) p2p
network. The programmers are all in different cities. I do have a web
site.

Can Project be used for this purpose? All I need is simple task
scheduling. I don't need resource management. Just a bubch of tasks
assigned to one person or another and with some interdependencies.

If Project can't do this, can anyone suggest another tool that can?
Ideally, it would be web based and could be installed on our web site.

Thanks

Hello (I posted this over on the Microsoft Group as well assuming you
are the same person asking the question).

If you want simple, sensible, and supportable web-based project
management software, I would welcome you to try the VPMi Express ($5/
user/month) at http://www.VCSOnline.com . For most companies, VPMi
Express is cheaper then Open Source hosting and very capable
(unlimited documents, projects, real workplans, issues, timesheets,
and status reports).

If you ever need more then projects you can upgrade online to VPMi
Professional. It additionally includes prioritization, capacity
planning, templates, programs, MS Project integration, and workflow -
all for only $10/user/month (report viewer/timesheet user) or $30/user/
month (PMs).

Both versions are free for first 30 days and we have an extensive
video training collection to help you get started.

We started in 1998 and this has been our life's work and have over
30,000 happy customers all over the world.

I am also the Chief Technology Officer for the Project Management
Institute (PMI) Information Systems SIG (ISSIG) and blog on Virtual
Teams and selecting project management software here:

I wish you luck in whatever you land on and you can feel free to write
us with any questions you might have.

Not sure letting others into the project file is a good idea. What I tend to
do with projects when I don't have project server is to print out the tasks
or the whole plan to pdf and post that to a web site, or email it. You would
still have to enter the tasks, and do the simple scheduling but that isn't a
lot of effort.

This looks promising except for the cost. I only have 2 users right
now, but the plans are for 20-30 fairly soon most of which are low
level people who may only access the system occasionally. At
$15/user/mo, that gets expensive quickly.

Have you used this system? Do I manage the project offlne using
Project and then upload it or do I manage it online?
If you don't need a scheduling engine, you could also use basic SharePoint
for this simple type of task tracking. WSS is free with Windows Server 2003
or higher.

I do need scheduling. That is the main purpose. I don't have a server
at this time.

Thanks
