Assignments are created in Microsoft Project when you assign a resource to a
task. Assignments can then be seen in either the Task Usage or Resource
Usage views, which are formally known as assignment views. I like to
explain the concept of assignments to my students this way, "An assignment
is who does what when and how much on each task."
When you are creating custom fields in an enterprise environment, you can
create custom Task, Resource, and Project fields. In a standalone
environment, you can create custom Task and Resource fields. In neither
case can you create custom a Assignment field. Sorry.

The Help function describes these fields as if they are as easy to find as
the "task" and "resource" fields.. In my Tools-Customize-Fields I only find
"task" and "resource" radio buttons for all the custom fields.
