Every time I try to insert from "My Documents" I get the following message -
MS has encountered a problem and needs to close. This started a couple of
weeks ago on office 2003 - I recently upgrafded to 2007, but it still happens
Has anyone got a clue as to what the problem is
OS XP

Can you expand a little more on what you are doing exactly? Are you saying
you encouter the error while using the Open dialog box or when using the
Insert Object or Insert From File dialog box?

If it's the Open dialog box, precisely when does the error occur? When you
navigate to My Documents or click the drop down at the top?

Can you also provide us with an exact error message?

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Beth
The problem occures on all office programms.
Using the insert button on the toolbar, picture, My Documents.
The My Documents box shows up, waits for about 10 seconds and then crashes:
The error message which comes up seems a little generic =
MS Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience.
Please tell MS about this problem etc
If I relocate the picture from My Documents to another location, such as
desktop, then Insert will let me insert the picture
Any clues?

Only one file on my computer called "My Documents".
This problem has only recently happened. The only change to my computer has
been the renewal of the anti virus program (Norton). I have spoken to them
and they have suggested a few tests but again all have failed

Without a specific error message there isn't a lot to go on.

It could be (still applicable for Office 2003 - use
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0 when referenced in the
article instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q245325

If that's not it, check your Event Viewer in your Control Panel in
Administrative Tools and see if you can obtain a more descriptive error
message.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Office 12 Sessions
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 24/04/2007
Time: 22:14:06

Computer: BOB
Description:
ID: 0, Application Name: Microsoft Office Word, Application Version:

41 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash.
I am at present on Office 2007 - but the error message does not refer to
"illegal operations" or Kernel 32.dll
Looks like I am stuck with moving the items to the desktop and importing
them from there

You're almost there, you are looking at the Event Sessions. What we need is
the error message found under Application, it should have a red circle with
an X). Please locate the error for Word, open it and copy paste the
information.

There is no reference to Word or MS Office in "Application"
The MS Office part of of the event sessions there are several crosses in red
circles which all say similar to the following
ID: 0, Application Name: Microsoft Office Word, Application Version:
12.0.4518.1014, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.4518.1014. This session lasted
41 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash.
PS Thank you for all your time you are putting into this problem.

The session events won't help us find the cause - all they tell us that it
crashed and you can tell us that. ;-)

Take a look again in the Event Viewer at the top in the section marked
Application. Scroll through the list and see if you can find an error (X in
a red circle) around the time Word crashed.

Beth
In the event viewer, application I have 1737 events. They nearly all fall on
one day 20/4/07 & the remaining on the 19/4/07
Most of these are Adobe CS3, a few are Automatic Live Updates and 1 Outlook
(hung). Unfortunately no "Word"
I can make Word crash again now by applying Insert as before, but nothing
appears in the event application.
Seems strange that all the recent events happened on 2 days. I did try again
today but no event recorded

Since you aren't able to find an error message, here are some of the
questions I have that may help pinpoint the exact cause of the error:

Does the error occur when you start Word in Safe Mode? Exit Word, hold Ctrl
and start Word. Continue holding Ctrl until you are prompted to start in
Safe Mode.

If the error continues to occur in Safe Mode then:

When you click the Picture button, does the My Pictures folder display
initially? If so, then does the hang occur when you try to select My
Documents? If yes, then how are you selecting My Documents, clicking it in
the Places bar (on the left) or clicking the drop down for Look In?

Are you able to access My Documents from the Open or Save As dialog boxes?

Are you able to access My Documents if you use another Office application,
such as Excel or PowerPoint, when you click Picture on the Insert tab?

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

1) Opened in Safe Mode - no change
2) Clarification: with a document open, I click the picture button and "My
Pictures" are available and this works OK but on the pop up "Insert
Picture" I go to look in and click on "My Documents" - that is when it
crashes.
3) Yes I can access "My Documents" from open & save dialog boxes
4) All the Office programmes such as Word, Excel, Power Point & Publisher
perform in the same way
hope this helps

That's strange, I posted a reply to your last response but it looks like it
never appeared.

If the error occurs only when you click the "Look in" list then the most
common cause is an invalid FTP site available in the list. Here's the
article I provided previously, I'm not sure if you tried this since it
wasn't confirmed but it should be ruled out:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q245325

In the article, for Office 2007, change
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0 to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0

No mention of the word "Kernel" Have looked for FTP in regedit but cannot go
down far enough - the route was:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software|Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Internet - at this
point there were no FTP Sites.

B

Beth Melton

I'm sorry, but I think I'm out of ideas. :-(

My only other suggestion is to recreate the entire Word key in the Registry.
That's not a major issue but you'll lose your personal preferences. Exit
Word and in the Registry, delete or rename:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word. A new key using the
defaults will be recreated the next time you start Word. If it doesn't
resolve the issue, you can delete the newly created key and rename the old
one back if you didn't delete it.

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

Hi Bob,

If I understand correctly the problem is the same in both Word 2003 and Word 2007, and that you can use Office Button/File=>Open for
documents, but not for Insert=>Pictuures=>From File and that you're testing using a new blank document?

If that is correct, then it may be that the Windows registry pointer for the My Documents folder isn't consistent in its location or
that Norton is getting in the way <g>. Is your My documents folder in the 'default' location on your Windows drive or has it been
relocated? (Use Start and then right click on 'My documents' and then Properties - what is the 'Target folder' location listed and
does 'Find Target' work in that dialog? Also from the Start menu check the location of 'My Pictures' and the sharing and 'Advanced'
permissions settings.

In Word 2007 use Office Button=>Options=>Advanced (Alt T, O, A)
and scroll down the advanced section to the 'General' settings near the bottom and in 'File Locations' and use 'Modify' to reassert
the correct location for Documents and ClipArt pictures, then restart Word and in a new blank document try the Insert=>Picture=>From
File again.

Beth
Thanks for all your help, at least its helped me find my way around word
etc. Unfortunately the key change didnt work either - I think it must be
something silly and straight forward - As I said - I can cope by moving
things to the desktop and inserting them from there
Thanks again
Bob

B

Bob - I fiddled with all the buttons you suggested, not quite sure what I
changed in the end, restarted Word and "WHAM" it working OK again.
Thanks for your help
