Issues with EPS files

Does anyone know if there is a fix to this issue:
When I place an EPS file saved from Adobe Illustrator CS
(11) and place that file into word, the image does not
show, but it will print. There is not a problem when the
file is exported as an 8.0 legacy eps. If anyone knows a
solution to this, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

Depending somewhat on the contents of the .eps file and graphics filter in
use for your version of Word, the PostScript content of .eps files will not
display. You can, however, in most cases add a TIFF preview to the .eps file
which will display. I use Ghostview/Ghostscript to add the TIFF prefix, but
there may be an option in the program you use to create the file to also
create a TIFF prefix.

Be aware that the graphics filter supplied by the most recent Word versions
is very flakey for .eps files. I have found that eps filter from Word 97
works great. Look at \Program Files\ Microsoft Shared\Grphflt\epsimp32.flt.
The one I use is dated 8/8/2000. It handles TIFF prefixes very well and is
pretty fast. Later eps filters try (unsuccessfully) to interpret the
PostScript and are very slow if they work at all, with the most common flaw
being freezing the entire system.

Thank you for your response, I tried your solution but it
did not work. I think it's an issue between Adobe
Illustrator 10 and up and Microsoft Word.

thanks again.

The EPS import filter present in some recent versions of Word does not
(fully) support Level 3 PostScript, which is what Illustrator 10 and up
probably default to.

I've been saving to Level 2 PostScript and it doesn't
view Word, so I really have no clue what the issue is,
since Illustrator 8 EPSs work fine. Thank you for your
comment to my issue.

Then I guess the Word EPS import filter is just not very robust.

That, and I have reason to believe that recent Illustrator versions
might include level 3 code even when saving as Level 2 EPS.

It's strange. If a mainstream application like Word finally integrates
a PostScript interpreter to handle EPS files, why not get one that
offers full Level 3 support? Ours does.

Although the level 2 postscript choice may be in
effect for the Illustrator EPS there are other 'feature'
factors that can cause an issue.

Word 2002 and 2003 do not show a TIF or WMF preview, they
attempt to interpret the EPS data both at viewing and
print time.

Are you using CMYK or RGB color modeling?

Do you have the same issue in Illustrator 11 CS if you
save as a WMF or EMF or use the 'Save for Microsoft Office'
choice (to create a PNG graphic) and insert those into
Word?
