I've unread emails but cant find them in inbox

The windows log on screen advises that I have unread emails. When I click on
the hyperlink under my sign in name, the sytem tells me how many emails are
in each account inbox but when I open either account in Outlook, there are no
"unread" messages. Where can they be sitting?
