Japanese characters showing as little Apples()

Version: v.X Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Hello,

OS 10.6.2
Word Office 2001. No issues in other 2001 products.

When trying to type in Japanese in Word, get symbols, not characters. Most of the characters are little Apples (). English seems fine.

My first guess is that you're using a Unicode font & Unicode isn't
understood very well by v.X, not at all by 2001.
