Java to Word Interface

All,
Is it possible to write a Java to Word interface? If so, what additional
software is necessary to facilitate this interface? I have been getting
conflicting suggestions and figured this forum would definitively tell me
what is required.
Also, I would prefer not to use Java (yuk!!) but that is a absolute
requirement.
