JPEG AND GIF PROBLEM

I need to save scanned documents as either .jpg or .gif. These are paper
docs, not images from the web. Most are text, one has a small picturealong
with text. I do not get these choices when trying to save the docs; the !@#$%
program defaults to its own "best choice". I have saved docs as jpeg or gif
in the past, but don't recall the circumstances. Research has only confused
me-do I need special software or Merlin to unravel Microsoft's or HP's (my
scanner) mysteries.

Your best solution is to go to the HP web site and look at the support documents
concerning your model scanner.
Are you using Microsoft Document Scanning? It will only save as .tif or .mdi.
Use the software that came with the scanner. My HP scanner software has various
formats.

Thank you for the courtesy you extended to me via your reply. So it should be
a software issue, just not one that I have to spend $ on, as some other
Googled sources would claim. I have read the HP support manual, but says
nothing about my .jpg or .gif issues. I have used MS Doc Scanning-yes, it
only comes in 2 flavors. I still have to wonder: Why can't I select what I
want, and the presets/auto-select be da_ _ _ d. Give me some choices (1 or *8
bit, colors or b&w) and I'll take my best shot. This is like an instructor
told me "Microsoft tries to outsmart you/think for you" except this is HP
doing me wrong.

You may get moe specific help if you identify your specific HP model.

While you are at HP support, suggest you verify that you have the latest
drivers installed.

In the scanner options for the HP 7100 series you can select where you want
the file saved and in a separate box the file format to use. If I choose to
save to a file, I have a large number of file format to select. However, if
I choose to save to a specific applications, the file format choices are
limited to the formats supported by the applciation.

Thank you Don for your reply. I have an old (by now) 2610 Photosmart. I just
have not gotten around to checking HP Support, or for the drivers. For some
reason the HP updates have stopped coming-more detective work to do. I did
try saving to a file but still could not get the .gif or .jpg I needed.
