jpeg graphic pastes with a lot, if not all, black

I'm am trying to condense some files into smaller file sizes. I am
cutting and 'paste special' as jpeg graphics. Some of these come out
with a lot of black around and in them, others paste virtually all
black. How can I keep this from happening?
