JPEGs in Word

How can I make sure that JPEG images which I would have composed using a
package such as Photoshop print as crisply as the image appears when one uses
such a package? I normally convert to PDF beofre printing.

There's no guarantee: Word's graphic handling is a bit iffy at the best of
times. However, best practice is to do as much of the graphic preparation as
possible in Photoshop -- set the finished size you want, then set the
resolution. Then save to a file, and import that file into Word. Don't
manipulate the graphic in any way once you've imported it.

I normally save JPEGs to the highest resolution possible BUT the compress the
pictures after inserting them in the Word file in order not to overload the
file. Would you suggest that I avoid compressing pictures?

Thanks

Yes I would. Save the files at 96 or 300 dpi. The less you ask of Word in
respect of graphics, the better. It's also worth experimenting with other
file formats -- it depends on the graphic of course, but for some, GIFs work
better.

I'm finding that .png files work quite well, even when they are compressed
(they often have to).

I often inserted png files in Word 2003, but in Word 2007 I always get an
error message "An error occurred while importing this file" whenever I try to
insert a png file. So I am now stuck with jpegs, though they seem to
reproduce quite well in Word 2007.

I would be interested in knowing why Word 2007 seems to prefer jpeg's to
png's, unless this is simply my problem.

I'm afraid it is "simply your problem". It seems the conversion filter
on your PC for the .png format is damaged or misconfigured. Try
running the diagnostics in Word Options > Resources, or the repair
option in the Office installer.
