JPegs just won't go away

Hello,
In preferences, Mail & News Preferences, View - I deselect the show
attached pictures and movies in messages..... and they still show up
no matter what. Quit and re-open, new emails, old emails, from
accounts int he domain, out of the domain, flagged, unflagged.....
is it my imagination or is that check box just kind of useless?
Suggestions?

related issue: no matter what, the email shows up in HTML format, even
if sent as plain text.... I personally don't care but the client
does....

Some servers convert to HTML automatically. I know some Exchange servers
do. I don't know why they'd ahve that enabled by default, but I've seen
it before. Could it be the case ?

Could be, I will look into it.... more time on hold with the hosting
company..... So much for simplifying things.
