JPEGs on the Web

I have just uploaded a web site, with two JPEGs on it. One is a logo, in the
master page, the other a photo on the home page. When I view the site with
Internet Explorer v6, the JPEGs both take time to download. I have asked my
ISP to check the site, and they say the JPEGs download almost
instantaneously. Is this a problem just with my laptop, or could it be
general? How do I rectify it?

How big are the JPGs to start with?

How are you getting to the internet (Dial, DSL, Cable)?

What's the URL for your page?

Also, it ALWAYS helps to say what version of publisher you are using.

If you used the picture right out of your camera it could be many
megabytes. That takes time to dowload (especially over a slow line)
then be resized by your browser. The ISP tech has the fastest
connection so they will see an almost "instant" download.

The JPEGs are 5Kb and 700Kb respectively in the index_files folder. We are on
512Kb broadband and using Publisher 2003 in Office 2003 Professional.

I created a couple of quick test pages. The first had a 700KB
(1536x2304) picture that I instructed the browser to size down to
400x600. It took almost 8 seconds to load. I'm on a mildly busy
corporate T1 line right now.

On a second test page, I pre-resized the picture down to 400x600 using
Irfanview which dropped the size down to 51KB. That page took less
than 2 seconds to load.

Bottom line... big pictures take time. They have to be downloaded,
cached, resized, and then displayed. There are other factors (border,
backgrounds, complex tables, your IE browser settings) that can make it
difficult to render but without seeing the page I can't comment.

p.s. (pet peeve warning) it's KB, not Kb. KB = kilobytes, Kb =
kilobits
