.jpg images will not display

I was looking at some .jpg images in "My Pictures" in MSWord & tried to look in some different files & now the .jpg files in the thumbnail display don't show & when I click to open them MSWord 'converts' them to computer jibberish.

What do I need to do so I can see these pictures again?

You cannot "open" images in Word. The My Pictures folder by default displays
files as thumbnails, but you have to "insert" these pictures into Word. If
you have installed Office/Word 2003, then see "Cannot View Thumbnail Image"
