jumping cursor

When I am typing a document in Word 2003, using my
Gateway 450 laptop, I'll suddenly find that the cursor
has jumped, on its own, from the line I'm typing to the
middle of a word on another line. I've set the touchpad
sensitivity to the least sensitive position, but it still
happens. I am careful to keep my fingers off of the
touchpad, but it still happens. Can someone suggest a
solution?

Make sure you have the most current driver for your Touchpad from Gateway,
or the generic Synaptics driver from
http://www.synaptics.com/support/downloads.cfm#drivers

There is a 'palm check' feature in newer versions of the driver which lets
you change the sensitivity whilst typing for just this reason.
