Junk Mail & Rules

Nigel Leach

Hi, I'm using Outlook 2003 on XP Pro.

Is it posible to create a rule that stops additional rules processing,
if the recived mail is piicked up by the Junk Mail filter.

I have an existing rule that SMS's me about personal mail, but don't
want an alert when for mails that are put into my Junk Mail folder.

Regards
Nigel

I hate to question the MVP, but the Junk Mail Filter is
just another rule, and you can change the order that the
rules are executed.
Edit your Junk Mail rule to include "stop processing more
rules" as the last line, and put your IM notification rule
AFTER the junk mail rule...you should be set.

No. Rules run first, then the junk filter.

Pray tell me where to change the order in Outlook 2003. I don't see
it.

The spam rule does not feature in the list of rules.

Maybe you are thinking of a junk mail filter added by some other
software.

I have several rules which are supposed to either delete messages or
move them into a folder. Each of these rules includes 'Stop processing
more rules' but I still end-up with some messages in the junk mail
folder that should have either been deleted or moved into a different
folder :-(
So if you are correct, and the rules are run first, the junk filter
must have some way of magically resurrecting messages that were
deleted by the rule.

Same here, except I'm on XP home.
I have mail coming from both an Exchange 2000 Server and a number of
POP3 accounts. Does it behave differently with Exchange 2003?
I think that is how it works by default. At least that is how mine
seems to be working.
I have a number of rules that move or delete messages, and they don't
appear to be running for messages that are picked up by the junk mail
filter. So I think you will be OK.

I would like some of my rules to be applied before the junk mail
filter and others to be applied only for messages not picked up by the
filter, but I'm not sure if this is possible.

Are the messages actually processed by the rule that you think are
processing them? if they are not moved or deleted then the rule is failing.

Seemingly not (although messages not picked up by the junk filter are
processed correctly). It appears as if the junk mail filter is
catching them befoer the rules are applied. Of course, it may be that
the messages are being moved by the rule and then the junk mail filter
is immediately moving them again - there's no way of really telling is
there? Either way, the messages end up in the Junk Mail folder.
As I mentioned before, if the junk filter is being applied after the
rules, it is still being applied to messages that have a rule to
delete them, so if the rules are being run first, the junk mail filter
must have some way of resurrecting deleted messages.
if they are not moved or deleted then the rule is failing.

Well if I manually apply the rule(s) in the Junk Mail folder, they
then get successfully moved/deleted.

Ideally, it would be useful if it were possible to somehow specify,
for each rule, whether or not the junk mail filter should be applied
to messages caught by the rule. Is this possible?

rules run before junk mail -it sounds like the rule isn't working on them.
to test, move them to a folder and use the run now option on the folder.
