KB936695 Compatibility Pack Update: HELP!!! I'M CONFUSED!!!

J

Julie

I need some help understanding what is to be done with the information in this KB Article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936695/

1.. The Title is: "Issues that are fixed in the update to the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"

I have not been able to find an "Update" to the Compatibility Pack. I have found a new version available (version 3). Is this what is meant by "Update"?

2.. Under More Information / How to update the Compatibility Pack / Method 2 / Windows XP:
Install the update by downloading the update for the 2007 Microsoft Office system. You can download the Compatibility Pack update if you want to install the Compatibility Pack on other computers or if you want to deploy the Compatibility Pack over a network. To download this update and to obtain installation instructions and deployment strategies, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2462C6D9-233E-475A-B116-8A243A6DE129

For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
934393 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934393/) Description of the update for the 2007 Office system: May 8, 2007
First of all, why is it now talking about an update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System? You wouldn't install that on a system running Office 2003 + compatibitility pack..... or would you?

Second of all, it talks about your options of downloading the compatibility pack and installing it on other computers in one sentence, then it says "To download this update" (as if it's referring to the Compatibility Pack" it gives you a link to the 934393 Update (which is NOT the same thing as the Compatibility Pack).
3. Bottom line question: Is this article trying to explain that the issues "fixed" by the new version of the compatibility pack won't be "completely fixed" unless the Office 2007 workstations also get a sister-update?

Hi Julie,

**Question 1:**
I have not been able to find an "Update" to the Compatibility Pack. I have
found a new version available (version 3). Is this what is meant by
"Update"?

**Answer**
We recommend you to go to the Microsoft Update site to auto check/install
updates. If you want to manually install the update, you can install the
Office 2007 update KB934393 to update the compatibility pack. This update
is also applied for the Compatibility Pack.

Version 3 contains the latest updates to the Compatibility Pack. However,
this version of Compatibility Pack is not the update. It is the
Compatibility Pack itself.

**Question 2**
First of all, why is it now talking about an update for the 2007 Microsoft
Office System? You wouldn't install that on a system running Office 2003 +
compatibitility pack..... or would you?

Second of all, it talks about your options of downloading the
compatibility pack and installing it on other computers in one sentence,
then it says "To download this update" (as if it's referring to the
Compatibility Pack" it gives you a link to the 934393 Update (which is NOT
the same thing as the Compatibility Pack).

**Answer**
The update KB934393 can be installed on the system running Office 2003 +
Compatibility Pack.

After installing this update, go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
check "show updates". It will show the update KB934393 under the entry -
Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system.

The update KB934393 is for Office 2007. It also applies for the Office 2003
+ Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system which can open/save Office
2007 files. After you install the compatibility pack for the 2007 Office
system and go to check for Office update, the related Office 2007 updates
are also detected/needed. Sorry for the confusing.

If possible, please provide a feedback in the bottom of the KB article
webpage.

**Question 3**
Is this article trying to explain that the issues "fixed" by the new
version of the compatibility pack won't be "completely fixed" unless the
Office 2007 workstations also get a sister-update?

I don't think so. The issue should also be fixed after you install the old
version of the compatibility pack and the update KB934393.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't
hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin

Hi Julie,

The hotfix that is listed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934393 is a
hotfix for Office 2007 only. It is not for the compatibility pack.

The article does seem confusing. In the section that reads "How to update
the Compatibility Pack" in method 2 it does say that 934393 can be downloaded
however this infomation is not really accurate. The patch at 934393 is to
upgrade office 2007 not the compatibilty pack. One thing that should be noted
though is that the compatibilty pack installs some of the same files that are
installed with Office 2007. So I believe what the article should say is... To
make sure that this issue is corrected either..

A. Install the updated compatibity pack if that is what you are using and
2007 is not on the box
or
B. Update Office 2007 if you have Office 2007 on the box.

In either scenerio I would expect the files Wrd12exe.exe and Wrd12cnv.dll to
be found on the box and require updating using one of the above methods.

So to recap...

If you are not using office 2007 but you are using the compatibilty pack,
make sure the updated version of the compatibility pack is installed from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466

If you are using Office 2007 make sure that you install Office 2007 update
from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934393/
