kb's turn to mb's??

Hi There.

Word doc's on our XP machine

When we look at the document icons within the Explorer folder it lists the
title,
that it is a word document, and the size of it- say - 261.KB.

When we hover the curser over the icon, a box appears with more information
including the size which now says>> 255.MB<< yes!! it now says 255 mega byte

Why does it say 261.KB in one place and 255.MB in the info box for the same
document?.

One document in question says 535kb and then 522mb, is this just a XP
program error or something?

Does this happen to you?.

cheers for now Steve

Hi Moonraker,

Perhaps you're overlooking a decimal point somewhere?
..255 MB = 0.255*1024 kB = 261 kB (= 261*1024 Byte > 267000 Byte)
since 1 kB = 1024 Bytes, 1 MB = 1024 kB.

Another problem is that hard disk manufacturers often calculate with 1 MB =
1,000,000 Bytes ... which does not make much sense and confuses everybody,
but makes their disks look bigger.

Still another problem that can mess a bit with the file size: On your hard
disk, some file might need to occupy some multiple of a minimum block size,
say 4 kB, and maybe some slightly different size on another disk with
another block size or file system.

These things do not really have anything to do with Word: You'll see them
with all kinds of files.

Greetings,
Klaus
