keep a text box in place

Re Word 97 ---------

How do keep a text box in place regardless of how the text or paragraphs are
changed?

Once you create and place the text box where you want it, right click on the
border of the text box. Click Format Text Box in the window that opens.
Under the position tab click to check Lock anchor and uncheck Move object
with text. Click OK.

BTW, this is also how you cause the border of the text box to disappear and
the fill to become different colors, make it transparent, and allow other
things to show through the text box. Experiment.

The problem is that the Format Text Box does not really seem to offer an
option to "Keep text box in Current Position."

Yes, you can do as you say, but I find that if the Text Box is on the 2nd
page along the left margin, and I delete paragraphs on the 1st page, the
text box jumps up to the 1st page on top of the Text Box that is on the 1st
page along the left margin.

Please keep in mind that Word was never meant to be a page layout program
like PageMaker or Publisher.

What happens if you make sure the text cursor is at the top of the first
page when you create the text box (on the first page) with the items marked
as shown before and then drag it into position on the second page then
delete the text from the 2nd page?

LV --

Thanks for your help. I was able to keep the text boxes where I wanted
them -- one along the margin of the 1st page and one along the margin of the
2nd page -- I had to fool with the paragraphs a bit. I just wanted to be
sure I wasn't overlooking a Word capability that would offer an option to
"Keep text box in Current Position" -- which apparently does not exist.
Like you say, Word was never meant to be a page layout program like
PageMaker or Publisher.
