Keep numbering on through blank paragraphs

If I have a numbered style like

1. First item ...and then press return get
2. ...press return again with no text and get a
blank line still in the numbered style but with no number.

Word has 'helpfully' switched numbering off.

Is there any way to keep the numbering going through blank paragraphs.

Thanks

The trick is to make them not "blank." If you type a space, Word will
preserve the numbering.

Regardless of how you apply numbering, you will lose it if you press Enter
in an empty numbered paragraph.

Thanks for all your responses.

Certainly it is best not to have blank paras but here's the rub:

I use Word 2003 and lock the styles down so that users cannot change
anything - works great except that numbers on paragraphs are lost by
enter on a blank para and CANNOT be retrieved by pressing the
numbering button because.....the style is locked!!

The only way is to delete the blank para or reapply the stytle but
really Word should make this an autoformat option don't you think?

Also 'locked style' should mean just that.

Hi Chris

I agree that this is a real problem with locking down styles in Word 2003.
If you want to add your voice to those who would like this changed, send a
message to (e-mail address removed). Put the word Word in the heading, describe
what the problem is, your scenario and why you would want it changed.
