Keep Remaining work by time period unchanged

Does anyone know how to set up a task assignment that would keep the
spread of remaining hours per week constant as actual time is posted
against it and to keep the start and end dates constant. For example,
"Jim" is scheduled to work 5 hours per week on a support task on
average until the end of the year. Jim may only post 1 hour one week
and 7 hours the next. The tool seems to always re-allocate the 5
remaining hours per week to something else AND the Finish date
changes. Is there a combination of settings we could establish that
would cause the update process to react the way we want it (kep the
finish day the same and keep remaining hours spread at 5 hours per
week)?

If you don't want the finish date to change, then set the Task Type for the
task to Fixed Duration. This will lock the Duration of the task and
maintain the original finish date. There is no way to lock the assigned
Remaining Work hours in each future time period, however, as these are
calculated by Microsoft Project based on the actuals entered by the resource
in past and present time periods. Sorry. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott,

For one, you can spread out the work up to the target duration and baseline
it. That way, you have a reference to the original work (5 hours per week).
