Keeping paragraph in view

C

Catt

Hello, When I type a paragraph the words go beyond the normal viewing area so that a site visitior must use the scroll bar to read that which I have typed.
I want the text I enter to be viewed withing the width of the viewing window. The only way I can find to do this is to put a return on the end of the line. However, the spaces between my typed lines becomes too big and looks bad. I went to paragraph and styles but can see no way to make the text stay within the window viewing area. Please tell me what I'm missing?
Thanks

Just keep typing. The text will automatically wrap at the window border unless there is something that forces the pagewidht to be higher such as a picture or a table with a fixed width or you have chosen formatted text.

Thanks for the reply Jens but that is exactly how I typed it in in the first place. I put the cursor at the left end of the page and typed the paragraph letting it wrap automatically. Once again, the problem is that the text goes beyond the normal viewing area. Unlike a table which you can set at 100% so that it fills the viewing screen I can see no way to set the text to do what I can set a table to do it at. Should I be putting the text into a text box perhaps???
Thanks, Catt

Hello, What you described is how I did it in the first place. I put the cursor at the left side of the page and typed the paragraph in letting it wrap by itself. I can set a table to 100% so that it fills the screen. Why can't I do that with text too? Would it help if I put the text in a text box?

C

Catt

Thanks but it's text not a table. Should I put the text in a table? Should I put it in a text box? I know I can set a table at 100%. I just assumed I could do this with a paragraph also. AM I wrong?

In that case you have something else on the page that forces it to be wider than the window. Post a link to the page and I or some of the others here can tell you what it is.

Yes, most likely in a table - not a text box.
Post the URL for a definite answer though.

In addition to the URL reply I would also like to add that I tried putting the text in a table. I chose the table and clicked on size and set the table to 100% width. It had no effect. The table (with the enclosed text) stayed in the same position. In other words you had to scroll the horizontal scroll bar to read all of the text as some of it is outside of the normal viewing area. Very strange. I've never had this problem with text or table commands before.
Thanks, Catt

Your paragraph will only adjust down to the widest image on your page with the way you have your
page currently designed. See the other pages on your site.

1. Your first image is 926 pixels wide, 324 bytes in size
2. Your second image is 850 pixels wide, 496 bytes in size
3. Your third image is 816 pixels wide, 447 bytes in size

These images are really too wide for the average visitor using 800 x 600 or waiting for them to
download if on dial-up, plus by having the text within the images, you lose the ability of search
engines being able to index your page's content.

create a table the width of the window. Make the table width a little less say
95%. type the content into the table cell - when it reaches the righthand side
it should to the next line.

you're treating FP like a word processor - it is not. If you need a word
processor, use MS Word.

You have an 850px wide image (your chart) plus a left shared border of ~150 px so your page text will always be at least 1000px wide
or have scroll bars when a use has a 800x600 screen

FYI
the use of & in a filename is illegal html
Change http://www.caturner.com/sshose&fittings.htm to
http://www.caturner.com/sshose_and_fittings.htm

Also remove all spaces from file names

Thank you, I understand now. I reduced the images and the text followed suit by wrapping in the same width. I threw this page together real fast because I had a customer who needed to see the various items quickly. I pasted all available jpgs onto the sheet and put the paragraph on the end as an afterthought. Thanks for the reply. Catt

Stefan, Thanks for the reply. I did not know "&" is illegal. Why does FP allow it? I would think I would get some type of error message. Anyway, I'll remove it the next time I redo the sheet which was thrown together real fast to put on the web so that one of my customers could see pictures quickly. And I will remove any spaces.
Thanks, Catt

FP will allow punctuatution and spaces but many browsers don't support them

Catt,

The ss ftg image is still a monster. Don't use FP to rescale the image file, do it with a image editor. Make it smaller and re-import it into FP (easier if you rename it) and re-insert it.

It takes a long time (even on broadband connection) to download those 3+ images on the fitting page. (btw you may want to remove the "&" from the page file's name - it may cause you problems down the woad).
