Keeping Track of Exhibits in Word

Using 2003 (or 2007, will soon be going there), I have a 900 page
document with about 200 pictures (exhibits) in it. They are sorted by
chapters (20 chapters), such that the first picture in chapter 5 is
5.01, the second is 5.02, etc. The numbers appear under the actual
picture, in normal text.

Is there a way to keep track of the numbers, such that if I delete one
picture, the rest of the pictures drop one number, so that there is
not a gap? I would like this to be done automatically.

OLD
5.01
5.02
5.03
5.04

NEW - delete picture 5.02
5.01
5.02 (the old 5.03)
5.03 (the old 5.04)

Same thing, in reverse, if I hadd a picture.

Thank you for your help!

Use a numbering field. Insert | Field | Numbers. Select your number
from there. Then you can simply copy the first field and paste it in
the next place and the numbers will automatically update.
