kerning in word art, word 2007

How do I kern Word Art text. There is a drop-down under spacing that says
"kern character pairs," but it doesn't do anything.

Word does not provide typesetting control that precisely. My understanding
is that Kerning setting pertains only to specific character pairs as
designed into the font being used. That spec is in effect by default for all
font sizes. The Kerning setting in the Format Font dialog effectively
permits disabling Kerning for font sizes smaller than what you specify.

You can adjust 'Character Spacing' to Expand or Condense in 5/100 pt.
increments. In 2007, click the dialog launcher button on the nameplate of
the Font group (Home Tab), in earlier versions go to Format> Font. Once
there you'll find Spacing on the same Character Spacing page as Kerning.

Sorry ‹ I looked right past the "WordArt" reference 8-}, but that just makes
it a bit more restrictive... WordArt is a graphic object, not document text,
so most character formatting features are out the window.

The points about Word's lack of typography control & Kerning in general are
still valid, however. With WordArt your only options are the Spacing
settings in the list where you found pair kerning. If you want more precise
tools you'll need to create your artwork in a vector based graphic design
program,(i.e., Adobe Illustrator) save it as an image, then insert it into
your Word document.
